The Monument Valley Iris Society Iris Show will be held May 31-June 1, at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff.
“With the recent rainfall to help things along, we expect to see the irises in full bloom,” said Kenzy Hernandez, a member of the Monument Valley Iris Society. “We have many kinds of irises, including hybridized ones from our members.”
An educational piece has been added to the event. “It’ll be the educational side of growing iris, from how to plant, grow, hybridize, and more,” she said. The day will include a video from the American Iris Society on “Growing Iris Basics-Part 1” by Bonnie Nichols.
The iris competition will be held on Saturday, May 31, and the public is invited to enter their irises from 8 to 10 a.m. The winner of the People’s Choice vote will receive 10 free rhizomes or 20 metal plant markers.
The Iris Show is free and will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. at the UNL Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff.
The public is reminded to take pictures and copy down the names of the irises in the garden they wish to purchase, for the iris sale that will be held on July 19, at the center.
