What makes a community a place people are proud to call home?
No one wants to live in a run-down town. The appearance of our neighborhoods, businesses, and public spaces sends a message to both visitors and current residents. Clean streets, maintained properties, and welcoming public areas reflect pride, care, and a shared commitment to the future.
Many rural communities are working hard to retain young people and attract new families. First impressions matter - whether someone is visiting family, passing through, attending an event, or thinking about moving to your town, each interaction shapes their view of the community. A positive experience, such as friendly faces, helpful directions, or an inviting atmosphere, can be the deciding factor in whether they return, invest, or put down roots.
Nebraska Extension programs such as Marketing Hometown America, Red Carpet Service, and First Impressions emphasize the importance of these impressions. They encourage communities to think about how they present themselves and engage with others in person and online (don’t forget that websites and social media are also part of your overall image).
Asking simple questions can help you start by highlighting what is working well.
- What are you most proud of in your town?
- What would you miss if you moved away?
- What recent successes should be celebrated?
The next step is action. Communities can build pride through small, practical efforts: organizing cleanup days, forming volunteer groups to help neighbors who need assistance, painting community murals, and more.
As you are thinking about spring cleaning, declutter and clean the outside of your house as well as the inside. You can help improve your neighborhood’s appearance by simply mowing your lawn, painting your house, and planting trees and flowers.
Community pride is about ownership. It’s about loving where you live and taking responsibility for its future. Even small actions can lead to lasting impact. What are you doing to help move your community forward?
